Four outlaws tried to rob Jake and Jo , and they shot Jo killing her unborn baby. So Jake and Jo made a pledge to get rid of all the outlaws they could.
The Pledge
Jake and Jo was in the buckboard going to town to do some Christmas shopping. As they left the ranch four cowboys rode up to them. One of the cowboys was pointing a gun at them and said, “Give me all your money!” As Jake reached for his wallet the cowboy started firing hitting Jo with one of the bullets. Jake shot one of the cowboys and the others got away.
Bob and Doc heard the shots and started riding up as fast as they could. They noticed Jo was leaning over in the buckboard so Doc checked and saw she had been shot. Doc told Jake, “Get her to the house as fast as you can.”
Jo was due to have a baby in four months.
After an hour of Doc checking on Jo he told Jake that Jo would be ok, but she had lost the baby. Jake, Ask “Can I see her?”
Doc said, “She is asleep and she needs the rest.”
Jake said, “I will just sit in there with her.”
The next day Jake carried Jo out to where they were going to bury the little girl they named Little Jo. Everyone was there and nobody had a dry eye. Jake made a pledge over the grave that he would do all he could to get rid of all the killers and outlaws.
Jo said, “I will help you!”
The next day Jake applied for a US Marshall Job and a week later Jake was a US Marshall.
Jake told Jo and Bob, “The first killers and outlaws we are going to get are the ones that killed my Little Jo!” Jo and Bob agreed.
One mile to the west of Jake and Jo’s ranch was a small town named Central and that’s where Jake and Jo was going when the outlaws shot Jo.
Jake didn’t know that the outlaws had robbed the bank in Central and killed the Sheriff.
Bob walked up to Jake’s and Jo’s house to see how Jo was doing. After about ten minutes of talking Jake said, “We need to ride over to Central and talk to the Sheriff about sharing his office with me.”
When Jake and Bob rode into Central they noticed that something was wrong. They rode up to the Sheriff’s office and went inside and found nobody there. While they were there the Mayor walked in. The Mayor told Jake and Bob about the three outlaws and what had happened. Jake told the Mayor about what had happened to Jo. The Mayor and Jake agreed that Jake should take over the Sheriffs officer.
Jake said, “When Me and Bob take off after those outlaws Jo will be watching the office because she was a Texas Ranger too.”
The Mayor replied, “That’s good with me and I think it will be good with everyone”
As Jake and Bob rode back to the ranch they noticed it was getting colder and it was clouds moving in from the north.
When Jake and Bob got back to the ranch and was talking to Jo and drinking coffee Jake made Jo and Bob his Deputy’s.
Jake said, “We will go over to the office tomorrow and get everything setup.”
Jake had told everyone on the ranch what his plans was and that Vernon would be running the ranch. All the men were ok with that.
The next morning as Jake and Bob rode to Central there was a light freezing rain falling so Jake and Bob had to ride slow. When they got to the office Bob started a fire in the pot-belly stove while Jake went to the telegraph office to send out telegrams to the people he had to notify where his office was. When Jake got back to his office Bob had coffee brewing.
Jake told Bob, “We will stay here tonight and get to know some of the people here.”
Bob said, “That’s what I was thinking.”
The next morning as Jake and Bob were riding back to the ranch it started snowing heavy.
Jake said, “Tomorrow is Christmas and it looks like we will have a white one”
Bob said, “It’s been a while since we’ve had a white Christmas.”
Everyone would be at Vernon’s house tomorrow for Christmas dinner and to get their presents. Jake and Jo got everyone a new pair of boots.
Christmas morning Jake got up and put more wood in the stove. Then he fixed the coffee pot for coffee and put it on the stove to brew. Then he looked out the window and there was four inches of snow on the ground.
When they were starting to eat Christmas dinner they made circle around the table holding hands and Jake said a prayer and at the end Jake said, “I pray that this circle will not be broken.” Everyone said, “Amen.”
After dinner they sat and talked for a while and then the hired hands left to do their chores.
Jake told Jo and Bob, “We won’t start tracking those outlaws till after the snow is gone and that could be a week.”
Jo said, “And I will be better by then.”
Jo told Jake, “When you go to Central I want to go with you so I can get to know the people there.”
Jake said, “I’m going in the morning so we will take the buckboard and tie my horse to the back of it.”
The next morning when Jake and Jo arrived in Central, Jake told Jo, “I will drop you off at the office so you can start a fire in the stove and I will drop the horses off at the stable.”
When Jake got back to the office Jo had a fire going in the pot-belly stove and had made some coffee. Jake started looking thru the wanted posters and found posters for the three outlaws that had shot Jo. All three were wanted dead or alive for $500.00 each.
Jake told Jo, “We can go over to the café where it is warmer and drink coffee over there.”
Jo said, “Well let’s go because I’m freezing and we can eat dinner and supper over there.”
Jake said, “After supper we will get a room over the saloon for the night.”
After supper Jake and Jo went to the saloon for a beer. While they were sitting at a table drinking their beer a rough looking cowboy came over and ask Jake who was going to watch the town when he was gone. Jake pointed to Jo and told the cowboy who she was. The cowboy laughed and told Jo she should stay in the kitchen.
Jo said, “You or anyone else get out of line and you will see what I can do!”
The cowboy said, “I want to see what you can do now!”
Jo kick the cowboy on the knee, the cowboy fell to the floor in pain looking up at Jo’s pistol in his face with Jo standing over him.
Jake said, “You ask for it and you got it.”
After a while the cowboy was able to get up and limp out of the saloon.
